Could you tell me the anti-aircraft system you believe to be the “best available” at the moment (which country, and the name so forth)?
I’m just curious because they even have manpads, currently, that are far more advanced than the types made back in the 80s. The Russians have the S-400 and that’s only seven years old and they’re working on the S-500.

I’m not an expert (and my husband would never weigh in on any of this) but even planes receive periodic “upgrades” to their capabilities, seems a safe assumption anti-aircraft capabilities are similar.
I can’t imagine (and, the grapevine would support my assumptions) that the best capabilities the world has to offer, currently, were only those in existence before the home computer.

Just or you Liz
Badpainter approved!!! Best Land Based Air Defense Systems (year entering service)
Ok so I was a bit off some of these weren’t available in 1985. That said I have no idea how much ECM has advanced at the same time. Actually I am a little concerned about that incident in the Black Sea involving a newer Arleigh Burke class Destroyer an SU24 Fencer and the spoofing of all the ships weapons/radar systems.
I’m gonna guess the newer Russian systems aren’t leaps beyond NATO technology, but that they’ve mostly caught up in terms of tech with big improvements in any manufacturing quality.

Thanks, Badpainter. :-)
I take a huge interest in this stuff (obviously). At one time, my husband was (relatively) forthcoming about weapons capabilities (in general).
Now he doesn’t answer any questions…even the stuff that isn’t classified, and he gets very grumpy when I ask (to be honest, he hates it when I discuss this stuff on the internet, he doesn’t even want me to peruse military blogs of any sort).

Least I can do Liz.
As an armchair general I have to admit I have lost almost all interest in anything military related in the 21st century. Maybe it’s an observers war fatigue or watching the military do stupid things, like the whole rape issue, or idiotic stories about the Army’s inability to design camo patterns for uniforms. I find myself fighting the urge to apologize profusely to every serviceman I see at the airport for being a citizen of nation that squandered it’s military in search of politically correct victories…..depressing.
On that note Happy New Year Liz and everyone.
